George Goodall

Private George Goodall was the son of John and Polly Maria Goodall nee Reynolds. He was born in Apr 5th 1896 in Radford, Nottingham, the second oldest of nine children. His father was a lace maker.

In 1911 George was an errand lad for an engineer’s and when he joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry two years later, in September 1913, he was working as a driller in a telephone works. He joined the crew of the Laurentic on November 24th 1914.

George was stationed on the Laurentic in December 1914 when the ship set sail for Sierra Leone and then Lagos to assist with the Cameroon Campaign and when in August 1915 the ship headed for Southeast Asia spending the next 10 months on patrol in the South China Seas. There followed months of general patrols around Halifax, Nova Scotia and Bermuda. The Laurentic returned to Liverpool, arriving in early December 1916. The crew were given a short period of shore leave, returning to the ship in late December. 

George was just a few months short of his 21st birthday when he went missing when the Laurentic sank. His body was never recovered for burial.

He is remembered on St John the Baptist Church War Memorial, Beeston, Nottinghamshire
