James Gaule, was born Hanover Street, Youghal County Cork on the18th November 1894 to Martin and Kate Gaule née Sullivan. His birth date on his service record is 4th October 1894 but on civil birth records it’s 18th November 1894.

His parents married 2nd Septmber 1888 in Youghal. Martin was a soldier. His address on the marriage record is Military Barracks, Youghal. His father is Robert Gaule, a labourer, still alive at the time of the marriage. Kate’s father is John Sullivan, also alive.

In 1901 the family are at Hanover St., Youghal.  Martin is a store labourer age 40. Catherine is 35. Their children are Robert 12, James 7, Michael 5, Martin 3, Catherine 10, Christina 2 and Marey 6 months. Martin Gaule died from pneumonia at the workhouse in Youghal 18th April 1906 at the age of 48.

In 1911 the family were in Mill Lane, Youghal. James’ big brother Robert Martin age 21 was head of the family. His mother was a widow age 46. James was 17, working as a labourer.  Also at home were Michael 14, Martin 13, Annie 18 and Christiana 12.

Kate Gaule died 10th August 1930 at age 60, Windmill Lane, Youghal.
